Can yt-dlp Download Skool Videos? What Actually Works
Learn when yt-dlp works with a Skool video provider URL, why lesson links often fail, and which workflow fits each player.
Sometimes—but not from every Skool lesson URL.
yt-dlp works best when a lesson gives you a normal URL for a provider it supports, such as YouTube or Vimeo. The outer Skool classroom link is a webpage containing the lesson, not necessarily a direct video address that yt-dlp can understand.
That distinction is why copying a Skool lesson URL into a terminal may return Unsupported URL even though the video plays normally in your browser.
Start by identifying the player
Skool lessons can use several video providers. Look for a visible logo, player menu or link that opens the video on its original platform.
| Player in the lesson | Sensible yt-dlp starting point |
|---|---|
| YouTube | Use the normal YouTube watch URL when the lesson exposes it |
| Vimeo | Use the Vimeo page URL when it opens for your account |
| Loom | Use the normal Loom share page if the lesson provides one |
| Wistia | Support depends on the particular public or embedded page |
| Skool-hosted video | Do not assume the outer lesson URL is a yt-dlp video URL |
The official yt-dlp supported-sites list changes as extractors are added and repaired. Check it rather than relying on an old list copied into a blog post.
Test a provider URL before building a command
Install the current release using the official yt-dlp installation guide, then ask yt-dlp what it can see:
yt-dlp -F "PROVIDER_VIDEO_URL"
If the command lists formats, the URL is a useful starting point. Download with a readable filename:
yt-dlp -o "%(title)s-%(id)s.%(ext)s" "PROVIDER_VIDEO_URL"
To prefer a result no higher than 1080p, current yt-dlp releases support format sorting:
yt-dlp -S "res:1080" "PROVIDER_VIDEO_URL"
Some selected formats need FFmpeg to combine picture and sound. The official yt-dlp documentation explains the current dependency and format behavior.
What not to do with a Skool lesson URL
Do not pretend the following command is universal:
yt-dlp "SKOOL_LESSON_URL"
It may fail because the URL identifies the classroom page rather than the provider video. Adding random headers, copied browser data or temporary media addresses does not turn that into a stable, maintainable workflow.
It is also a poor course-organization method. A temporary address does not preserve the lesson title, module position or page you will need later.
Why signed-in lessons are different
A Skool lesson can be available only inside the browser session where you joined the community or bought the course. Even if yt-dlp supports the underlying provider, the provider URL may not be exposed as a normal share link.
In that situation, a command-line article cannot honestly promise a single copy-and-paste command. The reliable starting point is the lesson page that already plays for you.
The SERP Skool Video Downloader works from that page and handles supported Skool, Loom, Vimeo, YouTube and Wistia players through one visible interface.
Choose the method by the job
| Your situation | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Public YouTube or Vimeo link is visible | yt-dlp can provide terminal control |
| Mixed providers across one course | Use the Skool extension from each lesson |
| You want controlled output templates | yt-dlp on a supported provider URL |
| The video only works inside the signed-in lesson | Use the browser workflow |
| You need to preserve course order | Track the stable lesson URLs and number the files |
For a full course, the hard part is not one command. It is keeping the module order, lesson title, provider and download status together. The entire Skool course guide provides that tracking workflow.
Verify whichever result you use
Open the finished file and check the beginning, middle and ending. Compare its duration with the lesson and confirm that both picture and sound are present.
Keep the stable Skool lesson URL in your notes even when yt-dlp successfully handles an exposed provider link. That gives you a reliable way back to the course context.
Use yt-dlp when you genuinely have a supported provider URL and want command-line control. Use the SERP Skool Video Downloader when the video belongs to the signed-in lesson page or the course mixes several player types.
