How do I start a download after installing the extension?

Open an ABC News story page, let the video player fully load, then click the extension icon. It will scan for sources and display quality options with estimated file sizes for you to choose from.

Will I need to keep the browser tab open while downloading?

Yes, the tab will need to stay open during download because HLS/DASH streams are planned to be stitched into a single MP4 locally on your device, which requires an active session.

Can I pause a download and resume it later?

A progress overlay is intended to include pause and cancel controls, so you will be able to pause an active download. However, resuming after closing the tab or browser is not expected.

Which browsers will the ABC News Downloader support?

It is planned for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave, Opera, Whale, and Yandex on desktop. Safari and mobile browsers are not being developed for this extension.

What operating systems will be compatible with the downloader?

Windows, macOS, and Linux are the intended operating systems. The extension will work within supported desktop browsers on these platforms, with no mobile OS support planned.

Will the extension include closed captions or transcripts?

No, closed captions and transcript files are not part of the planned feature set. The extension will focus solely on saving the video content as an MP4 file.

How will the downloader handle adaptive streaming formats?

HLS and DASH adaptive streams are expected to be automatically converted and merged into a single MP4 file on your device, so you will not need to handle separate segments manually.

Will I be able to download multiple clips at the same time?

Downloads are designed to run one at a time. There will be no batch queue, but you can start a new download as soon as the current one finishes.

Use ABC News Downloader only for videos you own or have permission to save. Respect the platform and creators, and do not redistribute downloaded videos without the necessary rights.

About ABC News Downloader

Commutes and flights often mean spotty connections, but your need for reliable news doesn't pause. ABC News Downloader lets you grab on-demand clips directly from abcnews.go.com and store them as standard MP4 files on your computer. Once saved, you can watch them anytime, anywhere, without relying on a live internet connection.

Getting a clip is simple: navigate to a story page, let the video player load, and click the extension icon. It automatically detects the video source and presents you with a list of available quality tiers, complete with format labels and estimated file sizes. Choose your preferred resolution, and the download begins immediately—no extra steps, no hassle.

All processing happens right on your device. The extension even converts adaptive streams into a single, self-contained MP4 so you never have to worry about compatibility.
